Wouter Dam
New Works 2020 - '21
November 7, 2021 - January 23, 2022
opening Sunday November 7, 16.00 hrs
Wouter Dam (b. 1957) creates ceramic forms that have an architectonic clarity. Their surfaces attaining a degree of precision and evenness that seems unexpected in a hand-made object. These qualities are nevertheless off-set by a sensuality present both in the curvature of the forms and in the velvety texture of their surfaces. The new sculptures, he made for Galerie VIVID, are shapes, assembled out of pieces made on the potters wheel. Each work is unique. By adding subtle color through matte pigments, sprayed on the surface, he enhances shape and shadow.
For the first time Wouter Dam made work consisting of several parts. Together they form a ring that hangs on the wall. At VIVID you can see a green ring out of 5 parts and a soft pink ring of 7 parts hung opposite of each other in the middle of the exhibition.
In 1975, he enrolled at The Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam where he began his exploration of shape and volume, which continues to fascinate him today. Dam’s work is exhibited internationally and is included in numerous collections including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the Detroit Institute of Art among others.
